Almost all of the deposit return systems (DRSs) in place in Europe have a Return-to-Retail model of DRS. Within this system, consumers can bring their packaging to all points of sale. There the packaging can be collected automatically through a reverse vending machine or manually.
A take-back obligation for retail is most of the time inscribed in the DRS regulation, to ensure that all retailers effectively participate in the system. Most systems also have an exemption for smaller points of sale: they are not obliged to participate but they can do voluntary collection.
